Things About me

Hello, I'm Katrina an I welcome you to Things Katrina says - my little digital playground, where you can read about a variety of media-related topics of mine interests. But first, let me say some things about who I am and my interests.

Background

I am from Latvia.
I study Interactive Media at TAMK.
I live in Tampere, Finland.
Before coming to Finland for studies I have lived in Denmark, where I also studied in Multimedia design and Communication programme. During my gap year after finishing high school, I dedicated my time to travel, work and explore new cultures in Greece and Finland. Besides that, I also traveled with music school's choir, where I studied vocal music for eight years.

Interests and hobbies

I enjoy spending my free time reading books, especially sci-fi and fantasy and do enjoy playing video games. My closest friend is nature and I seek every moment to spend my time outdoors. I love to challenge myself from time to time so life wouldn't get boring. I am always ready for new challenges and will go for the new and exciting, rather than old and familiar.

I am following the newest events in technology and more specifically I am interested in front-end development and UI design. I enjoy working with interaction development and learning how it advances with technology. I enjoy working in a creative environment with likeminded people, where I can express my creativity and be relaxed.

How did Cartoon Network shows evolve in time

Probably most of us remember or have heard about Cartoon Network animated TV series channel, which was particularly popular among 90's kids. In my case, it was a huge entertainment part of my childhood and I have seen it rapidly reforming from 2000 up until 2011 by the old shows being replaced by new ones. My main question in this blog post is: Is CN still something worth watching or did it diminish to please the newest generations? Now when asking someone else from my generation (mostly generation Z) about whether Cartoon Network has become something greater, the usual answer is: ''No, the old CN is gone and nothing can replace it''. Even though I do believe in that myself, I assume that there is that piece of our childhood that is irreplaceable so we do not want to cope with the fact that our favorite childhood cartoons can be replaced in any way. This is why in this blog post I will try to compare the new CN with the old one with an unbiased opinion of mine. E...

Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence analysis

In this post, I will do a textual analysis of Disturbed metal band's song The Sound Of Silence. I chose this song because it is one of those songs, which gives me emotional chills every time I listen to it. This song is only a cover by Disturbed but is quite different from the original one. But before heading to the analysis, here is the song's video: The genre of this song falls under the rock, however, it is quite different in the sense of what we usually perceive as rock music. There is no presence of electric guitar, bass, and drums as it is usual in rock music, but instead, there is piano, acoustic guitar and timpani. In some cases, it is classified also as a piano rock, which I completely agree with. I would not classify this song just as a rock genre as the sound and the feeling of it does not represent rock music in my eyes. The singer (David Draiman) is represented as the storyteller in the music video. At the beginning of the video, the artist seems to be vu...

What media is allowed in North Korea

Whenever I am in need of seeking information, news or entertainment I know that I can access everything in a matter of seconds. I can find different press releases, opinions, use social media and create content of my own without any restrictions (vaguely speaking). However, not everywhere in the world it is possible and one of those countries is North Korea. For me, it is hard to imagine that I might not be able to freely consume different types of media in everyday life, which is the reason why the available media of North Korea raised my attention. Media in North Korea is one of the most strictly controlled in the world and falls under tight government's control. Even though North Korea states that the citizens have freedom of speech and press, the censorship is strictly enforced in domestic media releases. It is also prohibited to listen to the foreign broadcasts or consume any uncensored media, which is not controlled by the government. So what are the types of media al...
