Avatar: The Last Airbender

In this post I will go through the animated TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender and why it is my favourite animated show of all times. I first watched the show around 8 years ago and rewatched it again recently.

Short plot summary
Avatar: The Last Airbender is portrayed in a world where people are divided in four nations: Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Each nation has benders, who possess one of the elements (waterbenders, earthbenders, firebenders and airbenders). The story goes around the main protagonist Aang, who is The Avatar, meaning that he is possessing all four elements and his task is to establish harmony between all four nations. The Fire Nation has engaged the world in a war that lasted for 100 years and it is Aang's mission to defeat the Fire Nation and restore the peace.

This is the intro part of the series:

Why I love it
The best aspect of Avatar: The Last Airbender is the complex storyline. It is a kids show, but it is sophisticated enough that it has attracted also many adult fans. When I started to watch the show on TV it didn't really attract my attention that much, but then I realised that I am anticipating new series with more and more impatience. The world and the overall style of the show is fairly simple, but behind that it is a complex world with its own history and an intricate society living within. Each character has their own story and it develops step by step as the series go. They are being introduced as the series go and each of them has their own struggles, uniqueness and abilities. As the characters are growing as the series go, the characters and the plot take a more mature angle to it as well, which is why I think I would watch it over and over again. There are also a couple of inside jokes in the series, such as cabbage man (his cabbage is being thrown all over the floor by other people in all the series) and an awkward cough whenever it's required. The ending series of the show reveal quite a lot of unexpected plot twists, which made me to engage in the show even more and keep watching it.

I know that a lot of people do not know about these animated series and some might even confuse it with Avatar movie about green aliens. Also there is another set of series, which followed The Last Airbender, which is called Avatar: Legend of Korra. However I would recommend anyone to watch it and let it captivate you as well. :)

  1. I absolutely love that someone made a post about A:TLA! It's one of my all-time favourites too. I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about the storyline being complex enough to attract adult viewers: the writing is so dynamic and the characters each have their own stories that develop naturally throughout the series, and you learn to care for each of them. Even small side characters that are on the screen less than 5 minutes can have extremely touching backstories.

    Such a great show, 10/10!

Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence analysis

In this post, I will do a textual analysis of Disturbed metal band's song The Sound Of Silence. I chose this song because it is one of those songs, which gives me emotional chills every time I listen to it. This song is only a cover by Disturbed but is quite different from the original one. But before heading to the analysis, here is the song's video: The genre of this song falls under the rock, however, it is quite different in the sense of what we usually perceive as rock music. There is no presence of electric guitar, bass, and drums as it is usual in rock music, but instead, there is piano, acoustic guitar and timpani. In some cases, it is classified also as a piano rock, which I completely agree with. I would not classify this song just as a rock genre as the sound and the feeling of it does not represent rock music in my eyes. The singer (David Draiman) is represented as the storyteller in the music video. At the beginning of the video, the artist seems to be vu...

How did Cartoon Network shows evolve in time

Probably most of us remember or have heard about Cartoon Network animated TV series channel, which was particularly popular among 90's kids. In my case, it was a huge entertainment part of my childhood and I have seen it rapidly reforming from 2000 up until 2011 by the old shows being replaced by new ones. My main question in this blog post is: Is CN still something worth watching or did it diminish to please the newest generations? Now when asking someone else from my generation (mostly generation Z) about whether Cartoon Network has become something greater, the usual answer is: ''No, the old CN is gone and nothing can replace it''. Even though I do believe in that myself, I assume that there is that piece of our childhood that is irreplaceable so we do not want to cope with the fact that our favorite childhood cartoons can be replaced in any way. This is why in this blog post I will try to compare the new CN with the old one with an unbiased opinion of mine. E...

Cartoons that predicted future

I have heard more and more cases where cartoons predicted the future and some of them have done it in quite a significant scale. It is somewhat creepy but intriguing enough for me to go digging up on which cartoons have done that. I know that there are quite a lot of cases so I will not cover many of them in this post and will go through a couple of examples. On top of the list will be of course The Simpsons , because I think that it has the most discussed cases in predicting the future. In one episode there was a frame with a brochure saying "New York at $9" and behind are the twin towers, which form together 9/11. The episode came out in 1997. The creators say that it was just a bizarre coincidence. "New York at $9" brochure (Image source:  https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/02/arts/television/simpsons-prediction-future.html ) Another prediction from The Simpsons was that Trump became president of US and Theresa May the prime minister of UK.
